ABSENCE MANAGEMENT TRAINING
Giving line managers training in absence management pays off, according to our latest learning and development research. Two-thirds of employers in our 2011 absence management training survey have seen reduced absence as a result of training initiatives. Among these, half say that the reduction has been significant. Only one in 10 believes that the training was unsuccessful.

Absence management courses tend to focus on an average of six areas, including return-to-work interviews, recording of absence and communicating with absent employees. However, they are less likely to cover the promotion of good health and stress prevention - two training topics that are, according to our research, associated with a higher-than-average absence reduction.

A new absence benchmarking dashboard has been added to XpertHR, providing data resources to measure and monitor the levels, costs and causes of sickness absence.

XpertHR will soon be releasing a follow-up study on absence management training, which will look at how employers deliver and evaluate the learning opportunities. The report will include useful tips from HR professionals on how they have made absence management training work for their organisation.
