HR careers survey 2011: qualifications versus business experience
While the majority of the 668 respondents to the HR careers survey told us that they chose their career in the profession "by chance", most would opt for HR all over again. Our research also found that HR practitioners view professional qualifications as more important for advancing in HR than starting out in the profession.

MEASURING THE SUCCESS OF TRAINING
Not all organisations try to assess the extent to which learning and development has contributed to the success of the organisation, but doing so can be fruitful, according to XpertHR research.
Just four in 10 of the employers participating in the 2011 learning and development budgets survey evaluate at this level.
Performance indicators they use include: appraisal results; employee satisfaction levels; productivity; and customer satisfaction. They get the best results, however, when they choose specific metrics that are linked to the goals of each training programme.
Virtually all the employers that measure training at an organisational level are satisfied that their training has had a positive impact on the success of the organisation, and half of these say they are "very satisfied".
This month, we also publish the second part of our study on absence management training for line managers, which examines how it is delivered and evaluated. Our results indicate that it can be more effective if it is interactive, includes one-to-one coaching by HR and is followed up with refresher training or guidance.
