PAY RISES REMAIN SUBDUED
Our pay coverage this week starts with an analysis of pay settlements in the first quarter of the year. There has been a lot of speculation lately about high inflation feeding through to pay awards, but our data shows that pay awards are stuck fast at less than 2.5%. This is markedly below retail prices index inflation of 5.3%, and it is not showing any signs of accelerating in the months to come.
We also present findings from our research into maternity and paternity leave and pay arrangements at 263 employers. We look in detail at the enhancements made to statutory maternity pay and reveal that more than half of employers pay more than the statutory maternity pay. However, in most cases this is subject to length-of-service criteria. Many employers believe that offering a generous maternity pay package encourages employees back to work, and prefer this method of employee retention over back-to-work bonuses.
An accompanying report looks at the arrangements that employers are putting in place to deal with the new right to additional paternity leave and pay. We found that only a handful of organisations are planning to offer additional paternity pay on more generous terms than the statutory entitlement.
