PUBLIC SECTOR PAY
While many private sector employees saw their pay rise dwindle to nothing during the recession, their public sector counterparts continued to enjoy an annual increase in salary. However, the tables have now turned, and while private sector pay awards are beginning to pick up, the public sector is subject to a two-year pay freeze.
We look back in detail at pay bargaining in the public sector during 2010, including details of how employees covered by all the salary review bodies have fared, as well as civil service departments and local government employees.
The fate of public sector workers is put into context by our monthly review of pay trends. This not only reveals that pay settlements overall are now at a steady 2%, but that early pay awards for 2011 are settling slightly above this level. The gap between pay awards in the public and private sectors is only going to get wider as the year progresses.
