PAY TRENDS
Our latest review of pay settlement trends reveals that - at 2% - pay awards are at exactly the same level as one year ago. The three months to the end of October mark the start of the quiet period in the pay bargaining calendar. Nevertheless, we have collected details of 96 pay awards in this period, on which we can base our latest analysis.

Almost half of the pay awards included in our analysis are worth more than the same group of employees received one year ago, but pay freezes remain a reality for many, with around three pay awards in 10 resulting in a nil increase.

The increase in the national minimum wage - by 2.5% from 1 October 2011 - is a key influence on pay awards at this time of year, with our sample including several retailers that have increased pay levels by exactly this amount. Others, however, have instigated smaller increases for higher-paid employees.
