ANNUAL SURVEY OF HOURS AND EARNINGS
Last week saw the publication of the findings of the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. Among the headline findings was that the gender pay gap has fallen to below 10% for the first time - it stood at 9.1% in 2011. Part of the reason for the fall was that while men's earnings grew by 0.8% over the past year, women's earnings increased by 1.9%. The median basic salary for all full-time employees stands at £26,244 per year, up 1.4% on one year ago.

Also in this issue we look at how nuclear decommissioning company Dounreay Site Restoration revamped its performance-related pay scheme to a system that rewards individual contribution rather than length of service. The pay scheme accompanies a new flexible broadbanded grading structure, which was introduced to ensure that the company is consistent with equal pay legislation.
