GREATEST INFLUENCES ON EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Respondents to our employee engagement survey believe that pay, quality of line management and job security are the factors that have the greatest influence on employee engagement.
There has long been a theory that pay and remuneration, while important, are not the most significant issue affecting engagement. However, it is the top-rated factor for one in three (33.8%) respondents. When looking at the impact of factors overall, quality of line management was most popular among our respondents, but when pressed on the single most significant issue, it was pipped to the post by pay.
This may be, in some part, due to the fact that pay awards have been depressed for the past two years, with a large number of pay freezes.
Generally, we find levels of employee engagement to be under pressure across all organisations, but with a significant sectoral split. The private sector is concentrating on this issue, but the public sector, grappling with ongoing cuts and changes, is focusing its efforts elsewhere. Who knows what price will be paid for ignoring the issue, and what long-term damage to employee engagement might ensue?
