Managing workplace conflict

Mediation practices
We explore the types of mediation practices used by employers and examine the range of issues and situations where mediation can be used to best effect.

Levels and causes of workplace conflicts
In this report on our workplace conflict survey, we examine the level and impact of individual workplace disputes experienced by employers, the reasons for disputes at work and the underlying causes of conflict.

Tools and techniques used to manage workplace conflict
This report looks at the practical approaches used by employers to manage conflict outside the use of formal procedures. It also explores the role played by line managers and the types and levels of training on offer to help them fulfil this responsibility.

How to deal with employment disputes
This "how to" guide deals with all aspects of managing employment disputes, specifically employment tribunal claims. It covers: responding to a tribunal claim; tribunal procedures in discrimination cases; compromise agreements; and deciding whether to settle or fight a case.

Economic forecasts: growth remains key
In recent months, policymakers have been torn between keeping interest rates low - to help sustain what has been a decidedly shaky economic recovery - and raising them to combat above-target inflation.

How employee wellbeing and engagement drive business performance
The evidence is that most business leaders still do not make a connection between employee wellbeing and business performance. One way to make organisations and those who lead them take employee wellbeing seriously is to make them publicly report on it.

Who cares about employee training rights?
Legislation that gives employees the right to make a request in relation to training or study has been in place since April 2010, but little research has been carried out since to see if it has had any effect on workplace training.

MEDIATION PRACTICES
Mediation can be a powerful tool when trying to resolve individual workplace disputes. We surveyed 65 employers that have used mediation and found that almost three respondents in four have used an independent third party to seek resolution over the past two years.

However, the research also showed that mediation is only suitable for certain disputes - this type of resolution is not going to be effective for disputes concerning pay or terms and conditions, for example. Our respondents told us that relationship breakdowns are the most suitable scenarios for mediation, followed closely by perceived bullying and/or harassment or perceived discrimination.

Clearly, resolving such issues in an effective and timely manner can have long-term benefits that will be felt throughout the business.
