Pension auto-enrolment: overview
Matthew Giles of Squire Sanders begins a series of articles on the pensions auto-enrolment provisions with an overview. Most employers will be required to adhere to the new provisions and will have to auto-enrol their workers into a qualifying pension scheme at some stage.

How to harmonise terms and conditions in a unionised workplace
Standardising pay and conditions is never an easy task, especially where such an exercise involves several groups of workers. We look at two harmonisation processes: one that led to a complete breakdown in industrial relations and another that was largely free from problems.

HOW THE PUBLIC SECTOR IS COPING WITH BUDGET CUTS
Our research finds that HR in the public sector is under increasing pressure to cut costs and, for many, this is the third year of relentless cuts to costs, jobs and services.

This is also taking its toll on relations with employees; three-quarters of employers feel that staff morale has worsened during 2011.

Alongside this, one respondent in five believes that productivity has suffered as a result of the cuts, and three in 10 think that skill levels have dropped.

But it seems that it is not just employees that are feeling somewhat disgruntled: more than one HR practitioner in 10 believes that they have not received the necessary support from senior management during the ongoing cost cutting.

Elsewhere, starting from 1 October 2012, employers will have to enrol workers into a suitable pension scheme and pay contributions for them. We explain the pensions auto-enrolment rules and provide an overview of the changes.
